Peter Häberle

Peter Häberle studied law at the Universities of Tübingen, Bonn, Freiburg/Breisgau and Montpellier. He obtained his doctoral degree in 1961 with Professor Konrad Hesse in Freiburg/Breisgau. His dissertation “Die Wesensgehaltgarantie des Art. 19 Abs. 2 Grundgesetz” (1962, 3rd edition 1983) was widely recognized and discussed in the scientific community. He habilitated with a study Grundrechts-dogmatische Thesen in Freiburg/Breisgau, Topos Öeffentliches Interesse als juristisches Problem (Public interest as a legal problem), 2nd edition.

He became a full professor at the University of Marburg. From there he moved to the University of Augsburg and then to Bayreuth. He was a permanent visiting Professor at the University of St. Gallen for more than twenty years. He was a visiting Professor in Rome from 1990 to 2007 and at Granada from 1995 to 2007.

Häberle is held in high esteem outside of Germany as well. His work has been published in eighteen languages. Häberle developed a specific interest in the field of comparative constitutional law and in cultural science. Since 1993 – and beyond emeritation – he has acted as an editor of the Jahrbuch des öffentlichen Rechts der Gegenwart (yearbook on public law of the present times).

Häberle is a member of scientific and professional national and international organizations. He has obtained many international honors and honorary degrees from several universities such as Thessaloniki, St. Gallen, Catholic University of Lima, Brasilia and Lisbon.
