Xavier Oberson

Xavier Oberson has been a Professor of Swiss and International Tax Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Geneva since 1995. He obtained his doctoral degree from the University of Geneva in 1991 and an LL.M at Harvard Law School in 1992. Oberson is the founding and senior partner of the law firm Oberson Avocats in Geneva. The firm is mostly active in the field of taxation, domestic and international.

Oberson has held numerous positions, such as a judge at the former Federal Appeals Commission in materials and contributions and as President of the Federal Commission of Experts “Rechtsformneutrale Besteuerung.” He is currently a member of the expert group “International cooperation in tax matters” constituted by the Federal Council in March 2009.

Oberson is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Administrative Law and Tax Law (RDAF). Each year, he chaired the Day tax law that organizes jointly with the College romand certified tax experts (OREF) of which he is an honorary member. Among others he is a member of the Permanent Scientific Committee of the International Fiscal Association (IFA), the Advisory Council of the International Bureau of Fiscal Documentation (IBFD), the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and International Tax Planning Association (ITPA).

Oberson was honoured at the STEP Private Client Awards 2012/13, the respected international awards for the whole private wealth sector. He obtained a Geoffrey Shindler Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Profession from STEP President Geoffrey Shindler OBE.
