Education and professional activities:
Professor Dr. Walter Schluep was one of the most influential Swiss lawyers of the last decades. After finishing his legal studies at the University of St. Gallen (HSG), where he gained his Doctorate in 1956 in the field of corporate law, Professor Schluep engaged in complementary legal studies at the University of Munich as well as at Harvard Law School.
In 1964, he obtained his Habilitation at the HSG, where he was named Extraordinary Professor for commercial, economic and European law in 1965 and where he co-founded the “Institute for European Law, Economic Law and Comparative Law”.
In 1968, Professor Schluep took over the Chair for civil and European law at the University of Bern. Five years later, he moved to the University of Zurich where he was Extraordinary Professor for private, economic and European law. He remained there until his retirement in 1995. He also headed the “Europa Institut” at the University of Zurich, which he co-founded in 1991. In 1997, Professor Schluep was awarded an honorary Doctorate by the University of Basel.
In practical terms, Professor Schluep acted as an academic leader, advisor, a consultant and as an arbitrating judge. For over a period of four terms in office, he was a member of the Swiss Cartel Commission (today: Competition Commission), which he presided over for fifteen years.
