Education and professional activities:

Professor Walter Stoffel studied jurisprudence at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) and procured his law degree in 1973. From 1975 until 1976, he attended Yale Law School in Connecticut, USA, where he obtained a Master of Law. In 1979, he received a Ph.D. from Yale Law School. The focus of his doctoral dissertation was on the obligations of non-discrimination in international law for Switzerland versus other countries.


Professor Stoffel was admitted to the Bar for the Canton of Zurich in 1979 and thereafter started working at a law firm. In 1986, he became a professor in the area of competition law at the University of Fribourg.
Additionally, Professor Stoffel taught at the University of Paris II (France), the McGill University (Canada), the Deakin University (Australia) and the University of Torino (Italy). The main focus of his research activities and publications is competition and company law; he is also concerned with questions regarding Swiss and international procedural law and court systems
From 1981 until 1987, Professor Stoffel was vice-president of the Swiss Institute for Comparative Law in Lausanne, and from 1994 until 2000, he was the research director of the International Association of Legal Science. From 2003 until 2010, he was president of the Swiss Competition Commission.
