Rolf H. Weber, Editor and Author

Rolf H. Weber (born 1951) is a professor of civil, commercial and European law at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, and a permanent visiting professor at the University of Hong Kong. He has also been visiting professor at the University of Strasbourg (France), the University of Leuven (Belgium) and LUISS University in Rome (Italy). His main fields of research are Internet and information technology law, competition law, international business law, international financial law and international trade law.

Rolf H. Weber graduated from the University of Zurich in 1975. Between 1975 and 1977 he was a clerk at the District Court of Uster and was admitted to the bar of the Canton of Zurich in 1978. Rolf H. Weber obtained a doctorate in law from the University of Zurich in 1979. In 1980/1981 he was a visiting scholar at Harvard Law School. Upon his return to Switzerland he worked as an attorney-at-law and lecturer at the Universities of St. Gallen and Berne while he finished his habilitation. From 1992 to 1995 he was a part-time professor («Titularprofessor») at the University of Zurich. Since 1995 he has been a chair professor at the University of Zurich.

Rolf H. Weber is the co-founder and director of the Center for Information Technology, Society and Law (ITSL) at the University of Zurich. This centre succeeded the Zentrum für Informations- und Kommunikationsrecht, which had also been founded by him in 1998. Equally, he is a founder and a director of the European Law Institute. Since 2008 Rolf H. Weber has been a member (vice-chair) of the steering committee of the Global Internet Governance Academic Network (GigaNet) and of the European Dialogue on Internet Governance (EuroDIG) and, since 2009, of the high-level panel of advisors of the Global Alliance for Information and Communication Technologies and Development (GAID). Following the incorporation of the «University Research Priority Program» (URPP) Financial Market Regulation in 2013, Rolf H. Weber became a member of the URPP’s steering committee and actively promotes its activities. Besides, he is engaged as an attorney-at-law and as a member of the editorial board of several Swiss and international legal periodicals. Furthermore, he is listed as a panellist of the WTO dispute settlement regime and participates on a regular basis as a judge in ELSA moot court on WTO Law.

His research focus lies on the mentioned topics. He was honoured with a commemorative volume at his 60th anniversary; this volume was edited by Rolf Sethe, Andreas Heinemann, Reto M. Hilty, Peter Nobel and Roger Zäch. A second commemorative volume published by previous collaborators (edited by Mirina Grosz and Seraina Grünewald) was published in 2016.
