Peter Forstmoser (born 1943) is an emeritus professor of civil, business and capital markets law at the University of Zurich, Switzerland.
Peter Forstmoser received a doctorate in law from the University of Zurich in 1970 and became an attorney-at-law in 1971. He obtained an LL.M. degree in law a year later from Harvard Law School. From 1974 to 2008 Peter Forstmoser was a law professor at the University of Zurich.
Peter Forstmoser was founder, chairman (1979–1999) and member (2000–2007) of the board of the think tank «Liberales Institut». Since 1997 he has been the vice-chairman of Gebert Rüf Stiftung (GRS), a foundation supporting scientific research and education in Switzerland. From 2000 to 2010 he was a member of the board of the think tank «Avenir Suisse». In 2005, Peter Forstmoser joined «the Sustainability Forum» (TSF) Zurich as a chairman. TSF is an organisation of corporations, public and scientific bodies that aim to foster principles of sustainability and corporate responsibility. Since 2010 Peter Forstmoser has been a member of the Board of Trustees of International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS). In addition, he recently became chairman of the steering committee of the Business Law Institute at the University of Lucerne.
Peter Forstmoser is engaged as an attorney-at-law in Zurich. He specialises in corporate law (especially law of stock corporations), limited liability companies and cooperatives, banking and finance, stock exchange law, collective investment scheme regulation and the liability of corporate directors and officers.
Peter Forstmoser is author and editor of numerous books and scientific articles on the topics of company law, capital markets law, principles of law and on questions of governance, sustainability and business ethics. In the early years of his career, Peter Forstmoser was also author of several publications in IT law. He was honoured with a commemorative volume at his 60th anniversary; this volume was edited by Hans Caspar von der Crone, Rolf H. Weber, Roger Zäch and Dieter Zobl.
