Reto M. Hilty is a professor (ad personam) at the University of Zurich and honorary professor at the Ludwig Maximilian University, Munich; he is a director of the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition (Munich). His areas of interest are contract law, competition law, protection of intellectual property, fundamental questions of property rights and new technologies. Furthermore, Reto M. Hilty is interested in the harmonisation of international property rights.
Reto M. Hilty studied mechanical engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich; 1st intermediate exam). He graduated from the law school of the University of Zurich and received a doctorate in law at the same university in 1989. Reto M. Hilty was department head and board member of the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property (1994–97). He obtained a postdoctoral lecture qualification in civil, intellectual property, competition and media law at the University of Zurich in 2000. Between 2000 and 2001 Reto M. Hilty was a professor of technology and information law at the ETH Zurich. He has been a faculty member of the Max Planck Society and director of the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition since 2002 (managing director 2005–06 and 2011–12).
Reto M. Hilty was elected as Yong Shook Lin Professor of Intellectual Property Law at the National University of Singapore in 2007. Reto M. Hilty has been an honorary professor at the Center for Studies of Intellectual Property Rights at the Zhongnan University of Economics and Law (Wuhan, P.R. China) since 2007. Furthermore, he has been an honorary professor at the Xiamen University (Xiamen, P.R. China) and a consultant professor at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology (Wuhan, P.R. China) since 2009. Reto M. Hilty is an honorary professor at the Tongji University (Shanghai, P.R. China), guest professor at the Renmin University of China Intellectual Property Academy (Peking, P.R. China) and a member of the academic committee at the Renmin University of China, Intellectual Property Academy (Peking, P.R. China) since 2015.
Reto M. Hilty has published several books, articles and book chapters.
