Rainer J. Schweizer (born 1943) is an emeritus professor of public law at the University of St. Gallen. His main fields of research are public law including European law, international law and the theory of fundamental rights.
Rainer J. Schweizer studied at the Universities of Basel, Vienna, Geneva and Bonn. He graduated from the University of Basel in 1969 and received his doctorate in law from the same university in 1974. Between 1990 and 2010 he was a professor at St. Gallen University. Rainer J. Schweizer was president of the Federal Data Protection Commission (1993–2006) and part-time judge at the Federal Insurance Court (1987–1995). From 1974 to 1986 Rainer J. Schweizer worked as a forensic assistant in the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP).
Rainer J. Schweizer was elected to the standing committee of the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences in 1998. He was a member of the scientific committee of the International Association of Judges (1998). Furthermore, Rainer J. Schweizer is member of numerous legal associations in Switzerland and foreign countries.
Rainer J. Schweizer has published various books, articles and book chapters.
